Artist's Comments

This is the roof of the Samuel Fox Building in San Diego's Gaslamp District. The Fox Building was built in 1929 and was home to the Lion clothing factory until 1984. The three upper stories were converted to apartments, and we stayed in one for Comic Con.

Gee, all that detail under there. There was just such a detail of artistry on things back then. Now-a-day's it's all prefab and mass produced. *sigh* Ah well.

Good memories. :D

Cheers!

It was charming in this view, but when we first walked up to the building, the bottom floor was under construction, and we weren't even sure we were looking at the right building. Inside is quite industrial, but the apartments were finished in marble and very charming. The only disadvantages to staying there were 1) only one key for nine people, 2) the basement parking space was almost impossible to get a mid-size car into, and 3) it was noisy, with the sounds of passing traffic and sirens coming up clearly from the street.

Diinzumo, you rock. I wanted to get a snap of that roof while I was there and never did. That is awesome.

Ah,m the owners need to invest in things like double glazing and insulator foam and stuff. It'll get there.
Still, you aren't there any more so, *shrug*. :)

Get well soon!

Y'know, I didn't even realize that tiling was there until I was taking pictures. What a pleasant surprise! I got this when Carol and I were walking back from the Con center Saturday morning.

Well, if a building is listed as a historical property (as this one is), you can't make any changes to the basic structure. The windows have to remain original. I think were I to live in downtown San Diego (not likely given the expense), I would try to find a building with as much sound insulation as possible.
:iconpeebo-thulhu:
Hmmm, couldn't they put the double glazing on the inside and put plaster/giprock boards over the foam insulation on the inside as well?

Surely that wouldn't change the 'structural' properties of the building? *shrug*
:icondiinzumo:
You'd have to ask the City of San Diego about that. I know I would at least have insulated the ceiling in the apartment because noise bounced around like crazy.
